This study evaluated the flavanoid and terpenoid fractions seperated from the extract of Lepidigathis cristata and Hemidesmus indicus on reducing hyperglycemia and free radical generation in streptozotocin and nicotinamide induced diabetes mellitus. Flavonoid fraction from Lepidigathis cristata and FTF from (Lepidigathis cristata and Hemidesmus indicus ) was orally administered once a day after three days of streptozotocin – nicotinamide induction at 200mg/kg for 28 days and the results showed that blood glucose, serum total cholesterol, triglycerides levels were significantly decreased, and there is no significant changes in the total protein level. Histopathological reports show the significant regeneration of β – cells in pancreas. The result reveals that both the fraction are potent antioxidants and shows the significant result in various biochemical parameters when compared with FF, FTF, showing the significant hypoglycaemic effect in STZ induced diabetes. The biological action of the both the fractions depends on the individual flavonoids and terpenoids present in the respective fractions, the above statement was supported by the HPTLC analysis.
